Congrats to October's 'Composter of the Month': Donna Suffridge of Union County!

11/1/2019

Donna Suffridge is October's honorable composter of the month, which comes with an exciting $100 prize! Check out her compost testimony below:

"I am actually a brand new gardener and composter! I ran across your website in May when I started thinking about putting a garden out. I wanted to grow as organically and responsibly as possible , so that included composting. I was excited to find the website, and promptly tried building my compost bin. Needless to say, it was an epic fail!  I looked into buying a bin, but was pretty disappointed with what I found in the stores. As I looked at the different styles , I came to the conclusion that I could repurpose my dogs kennel, and that would get me by for a while. I kind of laughed at myself about it, but I think it worked pretty well as you can see in the pics! My first season wasn’t flawless by any stretch, but not a complete disaster for a newbie like me! I hope you enjoy my video about my first experience with gardening and composting! I’m so excited about winning this month’s drawing!!!"

You too can win BIG by submitting your compost totals routinely and recruiting your friends, family, and neighbors to join Come Post Your Compost.

Drum Roll Please....October's Raffle Drawing Winner is Dan Field of Davidson County!

Dan Field won $50 for composting with #ComePostYourCompost! Check out his compost testimony below:

"While growing up we always had a compost pile. The gardens would come and go, but the compost pile was a constant.
I've had to move around a lot for work, but always had the goal of settling somewhere because I really wanted to have a garden. When we moved to Nashville and finally knew we were going to be in one place long term, building our compost pile was one of the first projects we undertook. We got excited and went all out, building a three bin system with pallets and chicken wire.

We get a huge sense of satisfaction every time we bring a load of compost out to our pile, and whenever we harvest vegetables from our garden fertilized with the compost from our pile."

Thank you Dan for composting with us, and keep up that dirty work composters!  ;)

Megan Jordan Unearths Her Compost Passion

9/23/2019

"Environmental conservation has been a passion of mine for a long time, and I started my 'composting journey' a few years ago with a pallet composter in my back yard. At one point in my journey, I became discouraged with the practice for several reasons: I started adding a lot of hay from my chicken coop, which was heavy and made my compost hard to turn & mix with my shovel; my chickens started getting into the compost and would toss most of it down the hill digging for bugs; and lastly, some of the loved ones in my life thought composting was gross, and disregarded the value I saw in it...
... Then, one day several months back, I noticed an ad for the “Come, Post Your Compost!” project on Facebook. It was so validating to see that the Tennessee Environmental Council thought composting was important enough to start a whole campaign & state-wide goal about it! Joining part in the CPYC project reenergized my composting efforts and motivated me to make changes to avoid future burnout. My husband and I converted a 55-gal drum into a rolling compost bin, which has made the whole process easier and more rewarding for me. Additionally, the possibility of winning a money-prize was enough to motivate the residents at the group home I work for to want to learn how to compost. We have had several house meetings to talk about what composting is, why it is important, and what you can or cannot put into the compost bin. Some of my clients knew about composting before, but for others it was completely new! Now composting is a part of daily habit for the group home, and once a week I take a kitty-litter tub’s worth of compost home to my rolling composter. I’d like to think that this habit will continue on with many of the residents as they move out.

For me, the Come Post Your Compost Facebook page has been a great place to learn more about composting while casually scrolling through my news feed, and it’s a great way to support one another. It has been so inspiring to see other Tennesseans who value this practice as much as I do!"
