TVA is currently conducting a comprehensive two-year study to assess its overall management of rivers and reservoirs in the Tennessee River system. Their task is a complicated one of balancing management policies to meet a variety of needs including flood abatement, navigation, hyrdropower sources, water quality standards, water supply needs, recreational uses, and the demands of economicgrowth. An important series of public meetings is being held to gather input for TVA from citizens on what we want to see in river management.
It is very important that TVA hear from people who care about managing the rivers for their biodiversity and water quality values. TVA will hear a lot from people who only care about flood control, keeping lake levels up for lake houses, boating and fishing etc. However, the Tennessee River system is about a whole lot more than just fishing and skiing. The rivers must also be managed to maintain optimal streamflow to support water quality and fully protect the amazing array of aquaticbiodiversity in our state. Please attend one of the many TVA meetings taking place between March 21 and April 18 across the state. Speak up for protecting the aquatic life in our rivers and streams and for protecting the sources of our public drinking water. If you'd like more guidance on this, please contact TEC tec@tectn.org or the World Wildlife Fund Southeastern Rivers Project (southernrivers@att.net).
