News from the Big South Fork!

Earth Week Project

On Monday April 14th , 2003 Lynne Anderson, TEC’s VISTA Volunteer for the South Fork area spoke to the Boys & Girls club of Huntsville about Earth Day and how we could work together to make a difference.  The children had a great knowledge about the environment and how to keep it clean.  We worked on the Earth Day activities book and had a coloring contest on one of the pages.  The two best pages were given prizes.  The children enjoyed their gift bags and had a great time talking about the environment.

On Tuesday April 15th we had our Nature Hike at Burnt Mill Bridge in Robbins.  There were a total of forty-four children and six AmeriCorps volunteers from Habitat for Humanity that were involved in the day's activities.  We played Campsite Bingo on our hike.  The children did very well at finding the plants and animals and other sites of nature from the sheet.  We had a total of eight winners for this contest.  After the hike we had a picnic there at Burnt Mill Bridge and then proceeded back to the school where we passed out the prizes and talked about what we saw and found on our hike.  The children as well as the adults had so much fun that we plan to do it again this summer.

Unfortunately, due to the weather on Thursday we had to postpone the Bear Creek Clean-up.  We do plan to have the Clean-up at the end of May or first of June.  That will be when the children will be given the t-shirts.  The Nature Hike and Clean-up was made possible by a TWRA grant.  Thanks to the TWRA and the AmeriCorps volunteers for all their help in making the children’s spring break a great adventure!
